Last September, the Islamic Museum of Australia hosted Tatreez and Tea, a unique women’s-only social event celebrating Palestine's art, resilience, and culture. The evening brought together women from diverse backgrounds, fostering a warm, inclusive space to connect over shared creativity and heritage.
A highlight of the night was the hands-on tatreez embroidery workshop led by Melbourne-based Palestinian artist Loor Awad. Loor introduced guests to tatreez, a centuries-old embroidery technique in Palestinian culture. She guided them through the intricate stitches and symbolic patterns, explaining the heritage embedded in each design. Women gathered with needles and colourful threads in hand, stitching pieces that embodied both the beauty and resilience of Palestine.
The evening also featured inspiring performances, such as Sanabel Ramahi’s poetry recitation, which conveyed heartfelt emotion and beautifully captured the strength and complexity of the Palestinian experience. Following the poetry, Heba Tayeh’s soulful singing echoed through the space, capturing her heritage's pride, nostalgia, and love. Together, these performances transformed the event into a shared journey through words, melody, and tradition.
Beyond the cultural celebration, Tatreez and Tea served a higher purpose. Through the generous support of guests, the event successfully raised funds for Human Appeal's humanitarian aid efforts in Gaza. Each stitch, verse, and song resonated as an act of solidarity with Palestinian communities, offering direct support to those in need.
The Islamic Museum of Australia is grateful to everyone who joined us for Tatreez and Tea, celebrating Palestinian culture while standing together for a more significant cause. It was an unforgettable night of artistry, connection, and compassion. Thank you for making this event such a beautiful success, and we look forward to many more evenings that celebrate Islamic art, culture, and community.
