The Islamic Museum of Australia (IMA) Patron’s Fund has been established to support the academic and creative pursuits of Australians looking to further their knowledge in a field of study or creative practice that will contribute to the IMA’s mission.

The Fund, initiated with seed funding from Museum Patron Ahmed Fahour AO, will see an annual pool of $50,000 available for individual grants of up to $10,000.

Ahmed Fahour AO said he was thrilled to support such an important initiative.

“This grant will enable many people to take the next step with their career, whether it’s for academia or craft. I’m fortunate to be able to contribute to this and other important initiatives, including at La Trobe University where I support a scholarship focussed on gender diversity and social inclusion for underprivileged women,” said Mr Fahour.

The grant is open to individuals and their immediate family who have contributed to the Museum since its inception – this includes artists, volunteers and program facilitators.

IMA Chairperson Ms Azmeena Hussain said supporting individuals who support the mission of the Islamic Museum is paramount to the IMA’s long term strategy.

“The Patron’s Fund not only enables contributors and future contributors to the Museum to further their education, it ensures the Museum takes critical measures to develop and maintain relationships with individuals who share our interests and understand our vision,” said Ms Hussain.

The Museum is also offering the opportunity for donors to contribute to the Fund and will match all public donations dollar for dollar over the next three years, capped at $300,000.

“This is an exciting new initiative which we know will not only pique the interest of potential applicants, but also those who are seeking a meaningful way in which to support the community,” said Ms Hussain.

“We certainly welcome the opportunity to hear from other individuals or organisations interested in contributing to the Patron’s Fund.”

Triple AFL premiership player Bachar Houli, who just played in his third winning grand final is one of the first in line to offer a donation.  Houli, recently announced as the recipient of the 2020 Jim Stynes Community Leadership award will donate a portion of his prize winnings to the IMA Patron’s Fund.

“It’s an honour and privilege to win this year’s Jim Stynes Community Leadership Award, and I’m so pleased to offer part of the prize to the Islamic Museum of Australia, whose mission to educate the wider community about Islam is also deeply important to me,” said Mr Houli

The Islamic Museum of Australia is located in Thornbury, in Melbourne’s north. It is the only Islamic museum in the country and provides educational and cross-cultural experiences for all ages. The Museum is currently closed in line with State Government directives relating to the Covid-19 pandemic, however a range of activities and programs are available online at islamicmuseum.org.au.
