On 19 October, we celebrated an incredible milestone, the 10th anniversary of the Islamic Museum of Australia (IMA) at our annual Gala Dinner. The evening was a beautiful showcase of talent and culture, featuring a captivating performance by Mitch Tambo and his wife, LeLe, Noora H, and a hilarious set by comedian Nazeem Hussain. Guests were also treated to a mesmerising live art display by Taungurung, Wotjobaluk, Wemba Wemba and Boon Wurrung artist Aimee McCartney. This unforgettable night would not have been possible without the generous support of our sponsors, including La Trobe University, Fettayleh Foods, Arada, and MCCA. We are profoundly grateful to our sponsors and community, whose belief in our mission has fueled our journey.
The journey of the IMA began as a dream and has grown into a vibrant institution thanks to our visionary founder, Moustafa Fahour OAM. His idea to create a space for cultural understanding and showcase Islam's rich artistic and cultural heritage first took root in an unlikely spot—a former water bottle storage warehouse near the scenic Merri Creek. With the support of his family, dedicated community members, and government bodies, that humble building transformed into an educational landmark that now welcomes visitors from all walks of life.
Bringing the IMA to life was a tremendous undertaking that involved over 20 consultants, including architects, interior designers, and cultural advisors. For Moustafa and his family, this journey was about more than creating a museum—it was about building a space where curiosity, empathy, and understanding could flourish.
Over the past decade, the IMA has impacted thousands of lives, offering exhibitions, programs, and events illuminating Muslims' diverse experiences in Australia and beyond. Our mission to foster cultural exchange, empathy, and connection has never been more critical, especially as we reflect on the global challenges facing communities like Gaza, Lebanon, and beyond.
As we celebrate this milestone, we express our deepest gratitude to everyone who has supported the IMA’s journey. Here’s to the next ten years of fostering cultural understanding and building bridges in Australia and beyond.
