Primary and secondary school students across Australia are set to benefit from a brand-new education platform developed by the Islamic Museum of Australia (IMA) with learning resources suitable for students from Foundation to Year 12.
Through the platform, the Museum aims to assist educators in developing a deeper appreciation of the history of Islam and the positive impacts of Muslims in Australia, including Muslim connections with First Nations people.
Islamic Museum of Australia’s Founder Moustafa Fahour OAM said the portal will change the way museum education in Australia can be accessed in the classroom.
“The platform takes the Museum experience from a one-off event to something that can be interwoven throughout any subject area at any time of the year, anywhere in the country,” Mr Fahour said.
The platform has launched with a focus on content from the Museum’s recently upgraded Australian Muslim History gallery, including a fly-through 360° view of the space. Plans are afoot for further expansion to include learning resources highlighting the Museum’s other galleries.
Islamic Museum of Australia’s National Education Manager, Ms Kym Wilton said the platform already has over one hundred ready to use resources.
“Our intention is to support every educator across the country, so if materials are not yet available, educators can reach out to us and we’ll work with them to develop content to support their needs,” said Ms Wilton.
The IMA’s new education platform, www.education.islamicmuseum.org.au and the technology upgrade in the Australian Muslim History gallery was made possible with support from the Australian Government Department of Education’s Students Support program.
The Islamic Museum of Australia is located in Thornbury, in Melbourne’s north. It is the only Islamic Museum in the country and provides educational and cross-cultural experiences for all ages. The Museum is open 10am – 4pm, Monday to Saturday.
