Islamic Museum highlights Muslims artists in new exhibition

MEDIA RELEASE
An object cast from hot glass, traditional Turkish water marbling, and pieces created with wool yarn and cotton thread are among the work highlighted in an exhibition opening today at the Islamic Museum of Australia (IMA). Australian Muslim Artists is an annual shortlisted exhibition showcasing the work of emerging to established Australian Muslim artists. Islamic Museum of Australia General Manager Ali Fahour said the museum is proud to highlight the work of artists from around Australia, some of whom trace their ethnic roots to countries such as Egypt, Morocco, Pakistan and Japan. “This year we are excited to have 19 exhibiting artists from across Melbourne, Adelaide, Sydney and beyond who collectively represent the rich, cultural diversity that exists in the wider Australian community,” said Mr Fahour. “They include new migrants, second and third generation Australians and Indigenous Australians and their work highlights the diversity of the Australian-Muslim experience.” IMA Head Curator Jake Carter said the work is as diverse as the contributing artists. “This year sees a range of concerns dealt with in a highly eclectic manner. Some engage directly with world politics, others deal with identity, investigating their image of self in the context of local societies, while others probe the recesses of interiority, illuminating the workings of the psyche and its spiritual journey,” said Mr Carter. Australian Muslim Artists 2018 is on display from 16 August – 15 October 2018. The Islamic Museum of Australia is located in Thornbury, in Melbourne’s north. It is the only Islamic museum in the country and provides educational and cross-cultural experiences for all ages. The Museum is open 10am – 4pm, Tuesday to Saturday.
