The Islamic Museum of Australia will join other Islamic educational institutions and mosques on Sunday 17 March, opening its doors to the public free of charge, as part of Victorian Open Mosque Day.

Free guided tours, craft activities and book readings for kids are all included in the day’s program. Islamic Museum of Australia’s CEO, Ali Fahour, encourages the community to attend.

“Open Day is a tremendous opportunity for the Museum to share the beauty of Islam with the community,” said Mr Fahour.

“The Museum is for everyone, and we particularly enjoy the support of non-Muslims on the day who take the time to learn more about Islam.”

“While we’re open six days a week, year round, free entry offers added incentive for many of our guests to come in. We encourage non-Muslims not to be shy, we appreciate there’s a lot of curiosity about our religion and our staff and volunteers are happy to chat,” he said.

The Islamic Museum exists to share Islamic art, culture and history with the wider community. Through its content, guided tours and for schools, curriculum linked activities, the Islamic Museum experience also contributes to dispelling myths about Islam.

Victorian Open Mosque Day is coordinated by the Islamic Council of Victoria, supported by the Government of Victoria and is part of Cultural Diversity Week (16 – 24 March).

The Islamic Museum of Australia is located in Thornbury, in Melbourne’s north. It is the only Islamic museum in the country and provides educational and cross-cultural experiences for all ages. The Museum will be open on Sunday 17 March from 10am – 4pm, normal trading hours are Monday to Saturday, 10am – 4pm.
