Alaqah explores the deep connections between Indigenous Yolŋu people of Arnhem Land and Muslim Makassan seafarers from Sulawesi, whose encounters since the 15th century forged a shared history of trade, culture, and kinship.
Rooted in the Quranic concept of Alaqah - signifying profound attachment - the exhibition highlights the resilience and legacy of three women: Bayini, Nyinyikay, and Gladys Bux.
Showcasing works by Yolŋu and Makassan artists, the exhibition features pandanus weaving, bark painting, yidaki, clay pottery, and hand-painted designs, alongside immersive soundscapes and video installations.
Presented in collaboration with SalamFest.
